RENO — The Reno-Tahoe Open PGA event announced last week the amounts of its charitable contributions from the 2010 event.

• Birdies for Charity: $21,411.80. Participants pledged an amount-per-birdie they anticipated would be made during the 2010 tournament and then all the proceeds raised by the pledge were donated to Reno-Tahoe Open registered charities. First Tee of Northern Nevada raised more than $8,000. Lisa Stevens, a First Tee mom, won a brand new Lexus IS 250 with her winning guess of 1,966 birdies.

• Chip in for Schools: $20,185.00. Area schools and related programs received event tickets to sell at a discounted rate to raise money and keep 100 percent of proceeds. Dozens of schools, sports, music and related programs participated throughout the area participated.

• Nevada Military Support Alliance: $40,000. As the official charitable partner of the Reno-Tahoe Open Foundation, the Nevada Military Support Alliance received a $40,000 donation from the tournament to help meet the needs of Nevada’s service members, veterans, and their families.

“Giving back is the fabric of a strong, successful community and we’re fortunate to have the PGA Tour in Reno to allow us to do just that,” said Jana Smoley, Reno-Tahoe Open executive director. “The Reno-Tahoe Open is successful because of the dedication of many sponsors, fans, volunteers and Montrêux members and their hard work. Dedication and loyalty are the reason our nonprofit is able to touch fellow nonprofits in our area. This is why we do this. Today we gave back $143,000 to our community, which puts our total contribution over the $2 million mark. It’s a great reminder of why we all work so hard and we’d like to thank everyone for the continued support and encouragement.”

Attendance at this year’s Reno-Tahoe open increased by 17 percent, according to event officials.
