Comedian Mike Epps performs at Legacy
A staple in the Hollywood comedy scene with movies like “Hancock” and “Next Friday,” Mike Epps is taking his wit from the big screen to the stage in a new stand-up comedy tour at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino. See the newest king of comedy at 8 p.m. Friday in the Grande Exposition Hall.
Epps first learned to grab the spotlight with his loud and proud antics as a kid. Growing up with 10 siblings, Epps competed for, and won, attention by telling jokes and pulling pranks, anything to make people laugh. He started working the stand-up circuit when he was still a teen and joined New York City’s Def Comedy Jam tour in 1995. Witty delivery helped Epps catapult to Hollywood in 1997. After a couple small roles Epps landed his big break as a lead character alongside popular rapper Ice Cube in 2000’s “Next Friday.”
From there, Epps continued to tackle the comedy scene through movies and Comedy Central specials featuring his sharp stand-up routine.
When not on set, Epps spends his time writing stand up material and taking his routine on the road. The “Mike Epps: On the Edge” tour sold out nationwide, securing Epps as a staple on the stand-up comedy circuit.
Epps performs at 8 p.m. Friday in the Silver Legacy’s Grande Exposition Hall. Tickets cost $45 and $60 and can be purchased by visiting www.silverlegacy.com or www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 325-4777.

NMA hosts two new exhibits
For Chester Arnold, painting is as much about politics and social responsibility as it is about crafting luscious, large-scale oil paintings. For more than three decades, Arnold has cleverly confronted a variety of challenging subjects ranging from land use issues to the global impacts of human and industrial consumption, accumulation and waste. Originated by the Nevada Museum of Art, “On Earth as it is in Heaven” features about 30 paintings and will be accompanied by a book with essays by Ann M. Wolfe and Colin M. Robertson that is available for purchase in the store.
Fletcher Benton’s “The Artist’s Studio” was conceived by the artist himself. The experiential exhibition recreates the studio where Benton works, offering a rare glimpse into what is typically a private space. Discover the inspirations, processes and tools that Benton uses to create his work while gaining insight into the artistic practice of one of the most important American sculptors of the 20th century.
Both exhibits will be at the Nevada Museum of Art Friday through Oct. 17. For more information, visit www.nevadaart.org.
Second Saturdays are free at NMA
Bring family and friends and introduce them to the Nevada Museum of Art for free on the second Saturday of each month through December 2010. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.nevadaart.org.
Huey Lewis plays at the Silver Legacy
It’s been 25 years, but “The Power of Love” is still a curious thing, as well as one of the biggest songs of the 1980s. Rock fans can see Huey Lewis and The News storm the stage at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino at 8 p.m. Saturday.
Watch as Lewis continues “Workin’ for a Livin’” on his new tour, defying the rock music scene for yet another decade. In 2009, the group had its 30th anniversary. Formed from two rival Bay Area bands in 1979, their contagious brand of straight-ahead rock ‘n’ roll has outlasted countless trends, selling more than 20 million albums worldwide. As great a recording career as the band has had, it’s their live performances that remain the stuff of legend. Huey Lewis and The News incorporate a variety of musical influences, including R&B and soul, to create their own unique sound. One of the highlights of their show is their a cappella rendition of early rock n’ roll classics such as “Sixty Minute Man,” “Under The Boardwalk” and “It’s Alright.”
See Huey Lewis and The News live at the Silver Legacy’s Grande Exposition Hall at 8 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $60, $70 and $85 and can be purchased by visiting www.silverlegacy.com or www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 325-7401.
