TMCC students earn awards in SkillsUSA competition

RENO — Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) student Katie Hildreth-Knapp of Sparks recently won a gold medal in commercial baking at the National SkillsUSA Conference held in Kansas City, Mo. Hildreth-Knapp also received a certificate of merit for skills competency.

TMCC student Andrea Garrett, also of Sparks, was recognized for a top 10 finish in culinary arts, placing seventh in the nation. She also received a certificate of merit for scoring above the national average in skills competency. In addition, student Daniel Graham of Reno finished fourth place in the diesel technology division.

Since 1967 the SkillsUSA Championships have grown from 54 competitors in three contests to more than 4,700 competitors in 84 hands-on skill and leadership contests. SkillsUSA-affiliated instructional programs represent more than 130 different occupational areas.
