Despite stranding 10 runners in the first four innings, Reno American got enough offense with the long ball to take down Sparks National 17-5 in five innings.
Sparks National got off to a quick start, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on Adrian Garcia’s two-run home run to center field. But that was the high point for Sparks.
The first of three Reno homers tied the game at 2-2. After Avery Nork singled to lead off the top of the second, Patrick DeLeon crushed a pitch over the left-center field fence.
It quickly unraveled for Sparks in the third. The first eight batters for Reno reached safely, including a leadoff home run by Brett Rocha on the first pitch Sparks reliever Nate Foreman threw. The towering solo shot gave Reno its first lead, 3-2. It was also Reno’s only hit in an inning in which it rallied for five runs.
Five straight walks plated two more runs. An error allowed another to score and a hit batsman with the bases loaded made it a 7-2 lead.
Reno could not quite get its edge up to 10 runs in order to institute the 10-run mercy rule after four innings.
Reno batted around the order again and would also do it in the fifth frame.
Rocha’s two-run single in the fourth helped Reno push the gap to 11-2.
It wouldn’t have mattered if Reno was able to get the lead up to 10 runs because Sparks answered back with three in the bottom half of the fourth, cutting the deficit to 11-5.
Jeff Boomhower and Bubba Bryant had RBI singles for Sparks.
In the fifth, Nork opened the inning with a double off the fence in right-center field. He scored on a DeLeon liner to center field.
Three batters later, Ryan Boucher lifted a shot down the left-field line that cleared the fence just inside the foul pole. It would have been a three-run homer had one of the Reno runners not missed third base. Instead, it was a 15-5 lead.
Reno added a couple unearned runs for the final 17-5 margin.
Boucher, Collin Crown, Rocha, Nork and DeLeon all had two hits apiece for Reno American.
Bryant was the only Sparks National player with two hits in the lopsided loss.
Sparks now drops into the losers’ bracket and will play again today at 5:30 p.m. at Governors Field. The local squad can still reach the championship game through the losers’ bracket.
