After arriving on scene, firefighters soon learned that people lived in the 30-foot by 70-foot shed at 3710 Pyramid Way. The occupants were evacuated with no injuries.
However, as firefighters battled the blaze, northbound traffic on Pyramid was shut down for more than an hour starting at about 6:10 p.m.
Five other homes nearby were also evacuated due to the threat of billowing smoke and jumping flame. However, these homes were not damaged.
Due to heavy fire, crews were only able to attack the flames from the outside, directing water streams into available open doorways. The attack was defensive in nature, with a strategy to keep the fire from spreading to nearby homes on the south side or into the field of grasses and sagebrush north of the structure. Crews on the north side of the structure did not have fire hydrants for a water supply and were forced to use three water tender apparatus to re-supply the engines – one from Sparks Fire and two from Reno Fire. Crews on the south side prevented the fire from spreading to the homes located there.
Due to the instability of the structure and it potential to collapse, no crews entered the structure Tuesday night. Fire continued to burn inside the structure as of 10:30 p.m. Tuesday in areas not reachable by the hose streams. A backhoe has been brought to the scene to remove the exterior walls of the structure to allow for complete extinguishment.
No dollar loss estimates have been calculated.
