‘Raisin’ Jason’ at Bruka

RENO — Brüka Theatre announces the third installment in The Original Play Reading Series of the 2009/2010 season: “Raisin’ Jason.”

These plays consist of original works from the Brüka ensemble and local playwrights. The intent of the readings is to give authors a chance to hear their work read by actors in front of an audience. Brüka Theatre does not alter the plays in any way, in an attempt to give the author, audience and artists a deeper understanding of the process of play development by workshopping ideas and new works. This is the second of four plays that will be read this season. For a full schedule, visit www.bruka.org.

Tickets are $5 in advance and at the door.  Audiences will enjoy a staged play reading and a discussion immediately following with the author to provide feedback and an open forum about the process.

Tickets can be reserved in advance by calling the Brüka Box Office at 323-3221 or purchased at the door on the day of the reading. The theater is located at 99 N. Virginia St. and will validate parking at the Parking Gallery on First and Sierra streets.

“Raisin’ Jason,” aka “The Caravan of Delights,” is a fast-paced, funny, off-kilter and barely sane look at America’s institutions and how they impact real people — in this case, a single parent and his child. Though it is not really a musical in the traditional sense, it is a play with music.

Brüka Theatre for Children presents ‘Rapunzel’

RENO — “Rapunzel,” a delightful, funny old fairy tale filled with imagination, colorful characters and adventure adapted by Brüka Theatre, will have public performances today, Friday and Saturday at 10 a.m. Doors for the performance open at 9:30 a.m. at the McKinley Arts and Culture Center located at 925 Riverside Drive.

Brüka Theatre proudly presents Rapunzel. Brüka Theatre for Children is a live theater performance incorporating physical theatrics, improvisation and audience interaction.

This classic adaptation of tales by the Brothers Grimm updates the stories for today’s audiences, while investigating and adapting the original story of “Rapunzel,” how it was handed down by word of mouth from generation to generation until the Grimm brothers captured it in book form in the late 1800s and how it could be applied today.

These performances for children and families are geared toward grades kindergarten through fifth, although Brüka’s Theatre for Children has found a large following of all ages. For more information, visit www.bruka.org.

Tickets cost $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and children under age 12 and $4 each for groups of 10 or more people with reservations made in advance.

For reservations and more information, call 323-3221. Box office hours are 12 to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Reservations are also available at the Melting Pot Emporium at its new location at 1047 S. Virginia St.

The theater will validate parking at the Parking Gallery on First and Sierra streets.

Pat Metheny part of Artown’s 2010 encore series

RENO — Artown brings world-renowned jazz guitarist and composer Pat Metheny to Reno Friday with his Orchestrion Tour at the Grand Sierra Resort. Metheny’s appearance wraps Artown’s inaugural encore season designed to bring people to Artown during the festival’s traditional off-season.

Metheny has won an astounding 19 Grammy Awards and has been nominated 33 times in 12 different categories, more than any other performer in Grammy history. Aside from all of the critic’s awards and fan accolades, Metheny’s focus remains continually on the breaking down of barriers and the exploration of new musical ideas.

This tour is no exception as Metheny moves from brilliant solo guitar improvisations to the unveiling of a totally new technology for the presentation of an acoustically driven “solo ensemble” music he is dubbing Orchestronics.

The performance will feature music from the forthcoming CD of all new original compositions, as well as some older tunes from the Metheny songbook.

Metheny performs Friday at 8 p.m. at the Grand Sierra Resort’s Grand Theatre with tickets priced at $35 and $45.

Friends of Artown sponsors receive 10 percent off ticket prices. Tickets are available in person at the Grand Sierra Resort box office with no service fees, by phone at (800) 648-3568 or online. For more information visit renoisartown.com or call the office at 322-1538.
