RENO — A Reno firefighter suffered burns to his hands battling a fire that heavily damaged a 100-year-old downtown apartment house.

At least four pet cats died but no one was injured in the blaze that broke out about 12:30 p.m. Monday at 644 Lake St. on the northeast edge of the downtown casino district.

Battalion Chief Jeff Frank says a working smoke alarm alerted the three occupants on the second floor in time to escape the fire.

Investigators say it was started accidentally when a candle caught bedding on fire.

The firefighter was injured by steam burns through his gloves while conducting search and rescue operations on the second floor.
