In a "Sheep Dip 46" video, Dawn Gibbons revealed a sense of humor by lampooning a divorce lawyer's reference to her as an "angry ferret". Gibbons' ex-husband Governor Jim Gibbons is the first Nevada governor who refused to participate in the comedy show.
Sheep Dip, now in its 46th year, gave northern Nevadans something to laugh about – namely their own state. The show was designed to take us back to some of the more scandalous and interesting news events of the past year and give a good chance to laugh it all off. However, the show was weighted heavily toward the backroom, or should I say bedroom, dealings of many politicians. Let’s just say that you may not want to take your little one to this show.
Although some of the jokes wore thin and the crew experienced a little mic feedback, the laughs kept rolling. Little Jonny Ensign made the butt of many of the jokes, his infidelity with a staffer and the subsequent payoffs were fodder enough. And once again, Gov. Gibbons was poked fun at. However, this time, it was his ex-wife, Dawn, that was doing the poking.
For the first time in 46 years, the governor refused to participate in the show, although last year clips showed Nevada’s leading man in his office with a copy of “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.” Take from that what you will.
No, this time Dawn stepped up to fill the governor’s shoes in the show, and did an excellent job.
Amid the talk of adultery and avoidance, was interspersed performances in tribute to Michael Jackson, done by an almost indiscernible Jackie Ford. While the woman brought an amazing talent to the generally skit-like performance, a fellow audience member turned to me after and said, “That was Jackie Ford?! I had no idea.”
The only other notable in the show was former state archivist Guy Rocha who did a fascinating and fun monologue about Nevada’s historical screw-ups.
The show also generally intersperses mock “commercials,” a tradition that has lasted many years. This year, each commercial was, in my view, a little unoriginal. Each was for either, “Testi-gone,” “Minuteman,” or “Politi-Pants.” The first two were pills promising shrinking testicles and reduced sex drive, for those women who were just too old to want that type of entertainment. The final product was targeted toward those cheating politicians who didn’t want any evidence left behind of their infidelity.
All in all, the show, as always, kept the laughs coming. I will certainly go again next year.
