Tribune/Debra Reid - Hundreds of wild horses wait for new homes at the BLM's Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Center in Palomino Valley. State wildlife managers say Nevada's wild horses are crowding deer, bighorn sheep and other wildlife out of their native habitat.
The state agency on Thursday filed a motion to intervene in the suit on behalf of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, saying an overpopulation of horses has left insufficient forage for native wildlife.
The BLM has said the planned Dec. 28 removal of the horses in the Calico Mountain Complex is needed to bring population numbers down to prevent habitat deterioration.
Equine advocates filed the lawsuit last month in federal court in Washington, D.C., saying mustangs should remain on the range across the West.
A judge's ruling is pending.
