The first effort in September collected 69 boxes filled with everything from candy to games and magazines. The response from the crew was emotional and ecstatic so it was only natural to follow up with a holiday delivery.
The ship already carries most of the basic supplies, so it’s the “goodies” the crew really looks forward to. The best goodies to donate are candy (no chocolates), chips, cookies, sunflower seeds in the shell, powdered drinks such as Crystal Light Lemonade, Gatorade and Propel water, gum, magazines, books and just about anything homemade.
Monetary donations are also needed to help pay the postage.
Goodies can be dropped off at the Sparks Senior Center at 97 Richards Way on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The last day for drop-off is Dec. 2. The center is closed this Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving.
Lions Club members and others will begin packing the goodies at 8 a.m. on Dec. 3 at the Sparks Senior Center.

The idea of sending goodies to the carrier crew came from Sparks residents Pat and Hugh Lantz, whose grandson serves on the Nimitz. Lantz and his wife are members of the Sparks Greenbrae Lions Club and often spend time at the Sparks Senior Center.
Lantz said both organizations jumped at the opportunity to help out and now he hopes the whole community will join the effort.
“It’s fun and there are a ton of homesick kids out there that we can help,” Lantz said.
