After a rough first day of the District 1 All-Star tournament, the Sparks National 11-12-year-olds needed to rebound quickly Sunday to avoid falling to 0-2 in round robin action.

However, not even an extended mid-game break could stymie the Nationals' momentum.

Following a 15-minute stoppage to tend to injured Truckee catcher Thor Retzloff, Sparks No. 9 hitter Brandon Fredman continued his at-bat and delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the team's 6-5 victory over the California foe.

Truckee broke open a 3-3 game with two runs in the top of the fifth on Lowden Smith's two-run single.

For the second time in the game, Sparks answered back in the same inning.

Henry MacDiarmid led off the bottom half of the fifth with a single.

Then Chase Hauder came up to the plate and put a charge into the first pitch he saw and launched it over the right-center field fence, tying the game at 5-5 with no outs.

The Nationals all seemed locked in at the plate after the home run. Dylan Jackson was robbed at the fence in right field for the first out, but Jared Longland came up and found a gap in the outfield for a double.

Cameron Taylor hit a towering shot to dead center field, but it was caught on the warning track for the second out. Longland was able to tag up and advance to third, which proved pivotal.

Ben Huerta dropped down a bunt, but Truckee pitcher Julien Thomas bobbled it, looked to third and then didn't have a play at first, leaving the door open for Fredman's heroics.

Truckee got on the scoreboard first with a trio of runs in the third. After leaving the bases loaded in the first two innings, Truckee broke through with three straight two-out singles to take a 3-0 lead. Smith's first two-run single of the game made it 2-0 and Thomas followed with his own run-scoring base hit to cap the rally.

It didn't take long for Sparks to start its own rally. Morgan Berge and Drew Peterson led off the bottom of the third with a single and double respectively. Both came home on MacDiarmid's single.

MacDiarmid moved up to third on a wild pitch and knotted the score at 3-3 on Hauder's RBI groundout.

Cameron Tyler pitched the final two innings of relief for the Nationals and earned the win on the mound.

The Nationals continue through pool play today at 8 p.m. against Reno American East. After having Sunday off, the Sparks Centennial All-Stars return to the field today against Reno National at 5:30 p.m.
